Best practice in data management nowadays needs to consider a chain of different elements aiming at connecting datasets to the world. These elements comprise quality control, persistent archiving, sufficient metadata and linking of metadata to the outside world. I will show examples how these issues are approached in sensor-based and biodiversity-related data within the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) and the relevance of data management at the level of the international LTER network. The resulting requirements set the frame for the evaluation of information systems like BExIS.
