Exploratory Semantic Dataset Search (Bachelor or Master/ German or English)

 

Exploratory Search Approaches go beyond the classical keyword search and allow users to search for relevant data interactively by using different filters or additional incorporated sources. Given is a semantic search over biological (meta) data with search results including ontological concepts, e.g., Schima Superba (a subtropical tree in China) is linked to the NCBITAXON ontology, ID:59677 Based on this information the task is to develop and implement a concept how additional external sources could be integrated and how this additional information could be presented in search. How users can interact with these sources? For example, at EOL (https://eol.org/) there is an entry for Schima Superba with further information. How to incorporate and present that information to users in search? The developed solution is supposed to be evaluated with users. The supervisor will give support in the selection of additional sources. The thesis can be written in German or English.

  • State of the art of exploratory search approaches
  • What could be additional sources for search?
  • Concept and development of an exploratory search UI
  • Evaluation of the developed solution with users

What do we expect?

  • Programming knowledge in JavaScript or TypeScript (Angular), HTML and CSS
  • Foundations of semantic web technologies
  • participation in the Management of Scientific Data course would be an advantage but is not a must (offered again in SS2019)
