Description

The Web contains a lot of information which is growing steadily. Most of the data in the Web is available in the form of web pages, which are HTML documents linked to each other using hyperlinks. Humans and machines can read these documents. But it is difficult for the machines to extract meaning from these documents. The Semantic Web is an extension to the World Wide Web, which brings structure to the meaningful content of the Web pages. The Semantic Web describes the data by maintaining its semantics so that software programs can make meaningful interpretations the same way humans process information to achieve their goals.

Aims

  • The vision, principles and fundamentals of Semantic Web, including Linked Data and ontologies
  • The importance of Linked Data
  • The technologies and standards of Semantic Web (RDF, OWL, SPARQL)
  • The logical reasoning with RDF and OWL
  • The use of Ontology Engineering methodology and tools to design and formalize an ontology based on a scenario and requirements
  • The current and advanced research topics in the field

Structure

The course will have both lecture and practical sessions. Every lecture will be followed by a practical session. There is a project associated with this course for all the students with a common scenario with easy and difficult tasks. The practical sessions will help the students to go through each task and complete the project.
