A student assistant in data visualization
Student assistant/HiWi position for data visualization development work:
- 20 hours per week or up to 80 hours per month
- Starting as soon as possible
- Flexible working hours
About the project:
visapps.de is a developed tool for the biodiversity domain knowledge-based visualization application. It helps biodiversity scientists in the visual exploration and understanding of datasets. Having a powerful visualization tool for easy data exploration would foster collaborations within iDiv (German Centre for Integrative Biodiversity Research (iDiv) Halle-Jena-Leipzig) and with external partners. This is the aim of iKNOW and PlantHub, two projects related to the production of knowledge graphs and a common data portal for iDiv data. As a matter of efficiency and best use of available resources, iKNOW and PlantHub are planning to build a joint data portal as the input for both projects is data of different iDiv members and external collaborators. We propose to use synergies between PhenObs, iKNOW, and PlantHub and employ a student assistant to continue the development of the visapps.de tool and transfer the respective program into the planned iKNOW/PlantHub data portal.
About the role:
To achieved the mentioned goals in the three project partners, the following tasks are expected:
- Analyzing limitations and challenges of Visapps visualization
- Complete the visualization at the PhenObs project
- Adapting and customizing the visualization application for iKNOW and PlantHub projects
- Extending the application to deal with updates of datasets and large-scale datasets
- Extending the visualization to displaying different datasets simultaneously
- Including further user functionalities in the Visapp
- Embedding the developed prototype in the iKNOW’s and PlantHub’s portals
The project infrastructure is as follow:
- Backend: Python, Flask, Geopandas for Geojson
- Frontend: JavaScript
- Database: SQLite
- Visualization Library: d3.js for visualization and jquery/bootstrap for UI elements
